Shia Islam 101: Imāmah & the Origins of Shia Islam

Course Description

This course will explore Shia Islam from historical and theological perspectives. It is hoped that as a class, we will analyze and articulate many of the basic concepts that help form a deeper understanding of Shia Islam. 


Time permitting, the following topics will be covered:  

  • The Origin of Shia Islam
  • Sources of Shia Thought
  • The Status and Authority of the Ahl al-Bayt (a)
  • Imāmah in the Qur'an and Hadith
  • The Criteria for Imāmah

Ages & Prerequisites

  • This course is open to women 18 and older.
  • There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Dates & Class Structure

  • Dates/times vary (see our note about flexible registration)
  • In-person sessions, 16 to 20 hours total
  • Students are expected to participate in a number of in-class activities and discussions.
  • Students will be assigned brief weekly writing prompts.

Additional Details

Attendance, punctuality, and participation are requirements for any effective course. More than one unexcused absence may be grounds for withdrawal. Students are expected to report anticipated absences as early as possible.
