Islam & Religious Pluralism

Instructor: Sayyidah Israa Safieddine

Course Description

This course will serve as an introduction to religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue from an Islamic perspective. We will explore the notion of religion from a Qur’anic perspective and reflect critically on God’s plan for humanity in creation and guidance. 


Time permitting, the following topics will be covered:  

  • Pluralism
  • Imān and Kufr
  • The Unity of God and Unity in God
  • God’s Plan for Humanity in Creation
  • Dealing with People Who Differ Over Religion
  • God’s Plan for Humanity in Guidance
  • God’s Plan for the End of Time
  • “Religion” in the Qur’an
  • The Challenge of Religious Pluralism and Salvation
  • Interreligious Dialogue and Its Objectives
  • Guidelines for Interreligious Dialogue

Ages & Prerequisites

  • This course is open to women 18 and older.
  • There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Dates & Class Structure

  • Dates/times TBD (see our note about flexible registration)
  • Ten in-person sessions (2 hours each session, for a total of 20 hours)
  • Students are expected to participate in a number of in-class activities and discussions.
  • Students will be assigned weekly writing prompts.

Additional Details

Attendance, punctuality, and participation are requirements for any effective course. More than one unexcused absence may be grounds for withdrawal. Students are expected to report anticipated absences as early as possible.
